Silver Dollar City Christmas 2026: My Guide to An Old Time Christmas

I go to Silver Dollar City all year long, but Christmas here is completely different. Once the sun goes down and more than 6.5 million lights come on, there is nothing quite like it!

An Old Time Christmas has been named America’s Best Theme Park Holiday Event by USA TODAY eight times, and if you’re coming to Branson for Christmas, I think Silver Dollar City deserves an entire day.

Yes, it can get crowded. Yes, Silver Dollar City is SO expensive. But there is also a ridiculous amount to do here, especially if you know how to plan your day.

Get there before the park officially opens!

You can get into Town Square before the rides officially open, and Molly’s Mill is open if you want breakfast. I’m not going to pretend Molly’s is my favorite breakfast in Branson, but if you aren’t picky and don’t want to make another stop before coming to the park, it’s convenient.

I actually love using some of this time for a quiet moment in the little chapel.

They also have an old-fashioned hymn sing-along there. I grew up in a church where all of our music was a cappella, and we sang many of these same old hymns. There’s something precious to me about sitting in that little chapel and hearing them again before heading out into a very busy day.

Then I’m ready for rope drop!

Do this before you’re standing inside the park trying to figure out where the heck you’re going.

Silver Dollar City is BIG, and if you’ve never been here before, it can be confusing. The official app has a GPS-enabled map, directions around the park, show schedules, ride wait times and even alerts you can set for shows.

The app becomes even more important during Christmas because you’re trying to juggle rides, shows, tree lightings, the parade and the Christmas train.

You do not want to discover that A Dickens’ Christmas Carol starts in ten minutes when you’re clear across the park!

Spend a few minutes looking at the map before your trip. Then check the current show schedule again when you get there.

Is Silver Dollar City at Christmas Worth the Price?

Silver Dollar City is SO expensive.

People complain about the ticket price all the time, and I understand why.

But here’s how I look at it.

If I were spending an entire day somewhere else in Branson, I’d probably do some kind of attraction during the day that costs around $30. Then I might go see a show that night and spend another $40 to $60.

Either way, I’m spending money.

At Silver Dollar City, I can easily spend the entire day here. I can ride rides, watch shows, see the Christmas parade, ride the train, walk through millions of lights, shop and eat.

That’s one of the reasons I don’t recommend coming for only a couple of hours. If you’re going to spend the money, make a day out of it!

And this is something people ask me all the time:

There is not a separate cheaper ticket just to come at night and see the lights. There isn’t a non-rider ticket either.

It’s one admission price.

How I Start My Day at Silver Dollar City

My rope-drop strategy is basically the same one I use during Harvest Festival.

I go left.

I like to start knocking out rides early, before the lines start building. Then I gradually work my way around the park.

Christmas is an especially good time to take care of the rides you really want to do during the daytime because once it gets dark, my priorities completely change.

Now I want the Christmas lights.

The parade.

The train.

Both big trees.

Christmas in Midtown.

Trying to cram all of that into the last couple of hours is how people end up running all over Silver Dollar City instead of enjoying it.

And Don’t Forget Thunderation!

This is your last Christmas to ride Thunderation.

After 33 years at Silver Dollar City, Thunderation is retiring at the end of the 2026 season. Its final scheduled day of operation is January 2, 2027, which is also the last day of An Old Time Christmas. More than 27 million people have ridden it since it opened in 1993.

If you grew up riding Thunderation, make time for one last ride!

Are the Roller Coasters Open During An Old Time Christmas?

Yes, as long as the weather cooperates.

A cold day doesn’t automatically mean every ride is closed. The big coasters people usually ask me about have different minimum temperatures:

Time Traveler: 41°F

WildFire: 40°F

PowderKeg: 40°F

Outlaw Run: 34°F

Thunderation: 32°F in dry conditions

Most of the other outdoor rides close somewhere around 35°F, although there are exceptions.

One important note about Outlaw Run: even though it can operate down to 34°F, it won’t begin operating for the day unless the temperature first reaches 37°F.

Rain, wind, lightning and freezing precipitation can also affect ride operations.

What Is Christmas Weather Like in Branson?

Branson winters generally aren’t as cold or snowy as what you may be used to farther north. We don’t get a ton of snow.

November averages around 56°F for the high and 35°F for the low. December averages around 45°F for the high and 26°F for the low.

But Branson weather is a box of chocolates.

I’ve been at Silver Dollar City when it was so bitterly cold that we couldn’t stand outside for more than five minutes.

Check the actual forecast right before you come and wear layers.

And if you’re coming on a really cold or rainy day, alternate what you’re doing. Spend some time outside, then go watch a show. Go back outside, then sit down somewhere warm for a meal.

You don’t have to freeze your tail off all day just because you’re at Silver Dollar City.

Silver Dollar City Has Two Big Christmas Trees

This confuses people because we now have two major Christmas trees.

The enormous eight-story animated tree in Town Square is the classic. Joy on Town Square combines the tree with music and lights throughout the Square.

Then we have the Grand Fir in The Plaza.

The Grand Fir debuted in 2025, so this is only its second Christmas. It is a real Christmas tree covered in 30,000 lights, and there are lighting ceremonies and entertainment around The Plaza.

People ask which one I like better.

I don’t have a favorite.

The Town Square tree feels like classic Silver Dollar City Christmas. The Grand Fir gives you something completely different.

Christmas in Midtown Is the Money Shot

If you want fabulous Christmas pictures or videos, go to Christmas in Midtown.

This is the money shot.

You’re basically walking down this little street surrounded by buildings absolutely COVERED in lights.

Silver Dollar City says there are 1.5 million lights in Midtown alone.

There isn’t a huge list of things you need to do here. That’s not really the point.

Slow down.

Look around.

Take pictures.

Take video.

There is nothing quite like walking through Midtown after dark!

Which Silver Dollar City Christmas Show Should You See?

I don’t have one favorite because they’re completely different.

If you want a production, go see A Dickens’ Christmas Carol. I love this one. Just remember that it’s all the way toward the back of the park, so check the app and give yourself enough time to get there.

If you want something fun, head to the saloon for Fa La La Follies. You can never go wrong with the saloon show!

And if you want something meaningful, see the Living Nativity.

The Nativity is performed in a theater without walls, so keep that in mind when it’s cold. But I think it’s such an important part of Christmas at Silver Dollar City.

In the middle of the lights, Santa, shopping, presents and food, it brings us back to what Christmas is really about.

Most show seating is included with admission. If you’re coming during Thanksgiving break, Christmas break or another extremely busy date, you might consider a Show Lovers Pass. Otherwise, I don’t think everybody needs one.

If you just absolutely hate standing in a line, that’s another story.

The Christmas Parade Is Brand-New for 2026

Silver Dollar City has a completely new Christmas parade this year!

After 12 seasons, Rudolph’s Holly Jolly Christmas Light Parade ended in 2025. The new Stars, Lights & Christmas Nights Parade debuts in 2026 and Silver Dollar City says it will be double the size, with all-new floats, characters and costumes.

I’ve already written an entire article about the new parade, so I’m not going to repeat all of that information here.

My biggest tip?

If your family can hang, watch the second parade.

A lot of families watch the first parade and leave. I like using that first parade to ride something or fit another popular nighttime activity into my evening.

Ride the Chistmas Train at Night

We ride the Frisco Sing-Along Steam Train every Christmas.

I specifically want to ride it after dark because it’s just more magical!

My biggest tip is to sit somewhere toward the middle of the train so you can actually hear and see what’s happening.

The problem is everybody else wants to ride it at night too.

The line can get CRAZY.

This is another place where that parade strategy comes in handy. Ride the train during the first parade, or position yourself somewhere that lets you watch the parade and then quickly get into the train line afterward.

The parade and the train are two of the most popular nighttime things to do. A little planning can save you a whole lot of standing around.

Go See Santa…and Look for Terry!

If you’re looking for Santa, he’s toward the back of the park, catty-corner from Crossroads Pizza. You’ll walk through a maze of Christmas trees to get to him.

But while everybody else is looking for Santa, I’m also looking for Terry Wayne Sanders. 😂

Terry has been part of Branson entertainment for years and plays several different characters at Silver Dollar City. Most nights, he’s the one you’ll see helping Santa.

At this point, every time I go back there to grab video of Santa, I also end up getting another selfie with Terry.

It’s become part of the tradition!

What Should You Eat at Silver Dollar City at Christmas?

First things first.

You cannot come to Silver Dollar City without getting cinnamon bread!

But the thing I specifically look forward to every Christmas is the butter toffee hot chocolate. I wait for that stuff all year.

If you want a sit-down meal, I like Reunion Hall at Christmas.

This is funny because I don’t particularly love it during the summer. During the holidays, I do! It’s a buffet, I think the food is better than Molly’s, and I’m much more likely to want a sit-down meal during Christmas anyway.

Sometimes you just need somewhere warm to sit for a little while.

I also usually buy a Christmas tasting passport. The selections change every year, so we won’t know exactly what’s on the 2026 passport until the new menu comes out.

Historically, I’ve typically liked the Harvest Festival tasting passport better.

We’ll see what Christmas brings this year!

One of Our Favorite Christmas Traditions

Every year, we stop at the Christmas store and buy personalized ornaments for our family.

When somebody gets married, we add one.

When a baby is born, we add one.

We mark important dates and milestones as our family changes.

Years later, those are the souvenirs that actually mean something when you pull them out and put them back on the tree.

And if you want a MUCH cheaper souvenir, look for the smashed-penny machines!

They’re one of the least expensive little souvenirs you can bring home.

When Is the Best Time to Visit Silver Dollar City at Christmas?

If you have flexibility, avoid Saturdays.

And here’s my easiest rule:

If school is out, Silver Dollar City is packed.

Thanksgiving break gets busy.

Christmas break gets busy.

Saturdays get busy.

Personally, I prefer Mondays and Thursdays. Early November can be fabulous, and early December is another one of my favorite times to go.

Silver Dollar City stays open beyond Christmas Day, with An Old Time Christmas continuing through January 2, 2027.

What If You Don’t Ride Anything?

Go anyway!

This year I can’t ride the rides at Silver Dollar City, and you better believe I’m still going at Christmas.

I’ll watch shows.

Ride the train.

Watch the parade.

Walk through Midtown.

Eat.

Shop.

Maybe do the Marvel Cave tour.

I can easily fill an entire day without stepping onto a roller coaster.

That’s why I say Silver Dollar City at Christmas is fabulous whether you’re two or 92.

And if someone in your group has mobility issues, keep those hills in mind. Silver Dollar City does have ECV rentals, but availability is limited, so reserve one ahead of time if you know you’ll need it.

How Can You Save Money on Silver Dollar City Tickets?

Watch Silver Dollar City’s website. They run different ticket promotions throughout the year, and what’s available can change.

If you’re already a Sam’s Club or Costco member, it’s also worth checking to see whether they have discounted tickets for your dates.

And if someone tells you about the old discounted Thursday tickets at the local grocery store, don’t plan around that. That deal isn’t around anymore.

But here’s the tip I really want you to remember:

If you have such a fabulous time that you’re thinking about coming back next year, ask about upgrading your ticket to a season pass BEFORE YOU LEAVE!

Do not walk out of the park and decide tomorrow that you should have asked.

Silver Dollar City Christmas FAQs

Is parking free at Silver Dollar City?

Yes. Regular parking at Silver Dollar City is free, and trams and buses take guests between the parking lots and entrance. Paid parking upgrades are available if you want something more convenient.

Can you leave Silver Dollar City and come back later the same day?

Yes. Same-day re-entry is allowed. This can be especially helpful for families with young kids who need a break before coming back for the nighttime activities.

What happens if bad weather ruins your Silver Dollar City day?

Silver Dollar City has a weather guarantee. If weather significantly interrupts your visit, stop by Guest Relations or a ticket booth before you leave and ask whether your visit qualifies for a complimentary return ticket.

Is Marvel Cave included with Silver Dollar City admission?

The regular Marvel Cave tour is included with park admission when tours are operating. Just remember that this is a real cave with a lot of stairs, so it’s not the right fit for everybody.

Does Silver Dollar City have charging stations?

Yes! There are free charging stations in several areas of the park with USB ports or power outlets. That’s useful when you’re using your phone all day for the Silver Dollar City app, pictures and video.

Before You Go

Christmas at Silver Dollar City has become part of our family’s Christmas.

It’s the personalized ornaments that get another name when somebody gets married or another date when a baby is born.

It’s that butter toffee hot chocolate I start thinking about every year.

It’s riding the train after dark, walking through Midtown and hearing old hymns in that little chapel that take me right back to the church I grew up in.

Yes, the 6.5 million lights are incredible. The shows are fantastic. And being named America’s Best Theme Park Holiday Event by USA TODAY eight times is a pretty big deal.

But somewhere in the middle of all of that, you start creating your own Christmas traditions too.

That’s the part that keeps us coming back.
