Dogwood Canyon in the Fall: Is It Worth the Drive?

If you’re looking for roller coasters and live shows, this isn’t the place.

But if your perfect vacation includes waterfalls, wildlife, beautiful scenery, and getting outside, I think Dogwood Canyon is one of the best half-day trips you can take during a fall visit to Branson.

October is my favorite time to go. The weather has finally cooled off, and if you time your trip right, you’ll probably catch some beautiful fall foliage throughout the canyon.

One thing to know before you go is that Dogwood Canyon is about a 45-minute drive from the Branson Strip. If you’re trying to squeeze four or five attractions into one day, this probably isn’t the best fit. But if you’re the kind of person who enjoys slowing down and spending time outdoors, I think it’s absolutely worth making the drive.

Is Dogwood Canyon Right for Your Family?

I recommend Dogwood Canyon most often to couples, empty nesters, multi-generational families, and anyone who loves being outdoors.

Families with kids can have a great time here, too. My favorite kid-friendly stops are the giant treehouse and the small nature museum where kids can crawl inside a life-sized eagle’s nest. It’s one of those simple little exhibits that ends up being a lot of fun.

That said, let me give you one piece of honest advice.

If your kids aren’t going to enjoy sitting on a tram for about 2½ hours, I’d probably save this one for when they’re a little older. The last thing you want is to spend the whole ride trying to entertain a child who’s ready to be somewhere else.

If You Take My Advice, Book the Tram Tour

If you only do one thing at Dogwood Canyon, make it the tram tour.

For me, that’s the entire reason to visit.

Not only does it take you through the canyon, but it’s also the only way to access the wildlife preserve. Seeing elk standing just a few feet away from the tram is something you’ll remember long after your trip is over.

Here’s my biggest pro tip.

Book the first tram tour of the morning.

I’ve been told that’s around the time many of the animals are fed, and in my experience they’re much more active. Every time I’ve gone on that first tour, we’ve seen wildlife much closer than later in the day.

Another fun part of the tram ride is feeding the trout. It doesn’t matter how old the kids are, they always seem to love that part.

One more thing…

Don’t wait until you get to Branson to buy your tram tickets. Fall weekends sell out, and I’d hate for you to make the drive only to find out the tours are full.

Don’t Underestimate How Big This Place Is

I’ve heard people say they’re just going to walk all the way to the end of Dogwood Canyon and back.

Bless your heart if that’s you.

My legs could never.

The canyon is much bigger than most people expect.

If you’re an avid hiker or biker, you’ll probably love spending the day exploring the trails. They’re wide, smooth, and accessible for many wheelchairs and strollers, making them much easier to navigate than a typical hiking trail.

But if you’re visiting for the first time and want to experience as much as possible, I’d personally spend my money on the tram before anything else.

Here’s How I’d Spend My Day

If I were planning the perfect visit, I’d book the first tram tour of the morning.

After that, I’d grab breakfast or lunch at the restaurant. I was pleasantly surprised to find out they now serve breakfast, and the biscuit flight was delicious. The chocolate gravy biscuit was my favorite.

Then I’d let the kids explore the treehouse and museum before deciding how much energy everyone has left.

If you’re still ready for more, horseback riding would be my next choice. It’s such a unique way to experience the canyon.

If horseback riding isn’t your thing, rent a bike and spend some time riding through the canyon instead.

My Final Thoughts

I’ve heard people criticize Dogwood Canyon because they think it’s too polished.

After visiting myself, I see it differently.

I think Johnny Morris created a place where families can experience the beauty of the Ozarks while preserving thousands of acres of natural landscape. I’m thankful places like this exist because not everyone has the ability to hike deep into the backcountry, and Dogwood Canyon gives people a chance to experience scenery they might never see otherwise.

If you love the outdoors, I think Dogwood Canyon deserves a spot on your fall itinerary.

Just do yourself one favor.

Book the first tram of the day.
